Do you have what it takes to accept the Ludum Dare?
What is Ludum Dare?
It's a challenge and competition to make a video game from scratch in 48 hours. A theme is announced at the beginning of the competition, and from then the participants have 48 hours to make a complete game, including all art, sounds, music, and code. Many consider it an accomplishment just to make it to the end, let alone do well in the competition!
That's crazy! Why would I want to do that?
For starters, it's a heck of a challenge, one that's fun to rise to. It's also really good practice for making games if that's something you're interested in doing as a hobby or profession. A number of real games have come out of Ludum Dares past. Also, there's a great community of people that will all be working on their games with you. Don't worry if you don't think you'll do badly, so do most people. It's more about the experience, and if you get recognition, all the better!
Okay, I'm interested, what do I have to do?
First, grab one of the spots at KwartzLab by taking a ticket from above. We're keeping this really small for this first run in order to make sure we don't over-stuff the lab. Then, read the Rules and Guide. Don't worry, it's really not complicated. Then, come out to:
The Warm Up Weekend:
April 14-15
Noon-8pm each day
@KwartzLab
The warmup weekend is very important for having a successful competition. The goal during the warmup weekend is to get used to your tools, whatever engine you're going to use, etc. If you can't make it out for warmup weekend, it's recommended to take at least 4-5 hours figuring this stuff out so that you are ready to go for the Competition! By reserving a spot at the competition, you're guaranteeing yourself a spot for warmup weekend, but you're not required to attend.
Once you've done that, come out to:
Ludum Dare - The competition
April 20-22
Starting at 8PM on the 20th, going until 10PM on the 22nd
@KwartzLab
Some food will be sponsored, but not all.
This is it, what we've been waiting for. Bring your laptop, sit down with a bunch of new friends, get out the energy drinks and wait for the theme to be announced...
Demos!
(This is tentative) If any of us have energy left after the weekend, we might open up the lab Sunday night and demo our games. Given that this is our first time doing this, no guarantees, but we'll try!
