Event Information

At Mobeers 2: Son of Mobeers we will be having amazing guest speakers talking about bringing voice to your mobile apps, crazy adventures in the Symbianland and what it means for an app to be social. Beers are on us.

All ticket proceeds will be donated to Operation Smile.

Voice-enabled apps in 3 lines of code

We all started learning programming in order to make magic: being able to write a few lines of code that will make a cold, soulless machine to spring into life and sometimes even do exactly what we want! Unfortunately, the reality of modern frameworks is that there are often many more than a few lines of code that are needed to do something that is pretty far from magic. Well, Twillio’s new Voice SDK will bring your inner child back to life alongside with a voice channel for your mobile app. In just a few lines of code.

Jack Aboutboul, our guest from New York, will tell you the war room stories about the thinking process and implementation challenges that were overcome in order to let you make your app voice-enabled in literally 3 lines of code. Prior to joining Twillio, Jack has done a lot of amazing things with Fedora Project.

Symbian, Qt and all that’s in the middle

Being in Waterloo, it is easy to forget who actually made the first smartphone and living in North America it is even easier to forget which mobile platform still has a stronghold on Southeast Asia, Europe and Middle East. Yes, we are talking about Nokia’s often picked on child - Symbian.

About 5 months ago a couple of coop students working at Kik have started their journey into this extremely fragmented, esoteric, yet powerful mobile platform. Ahead of them were at least 57 all-nighters and 11 coding weekends, 2400 commits, and 64000 lines of code. Julian Haldenby and Mike Mackenzie worked impossible hours and slayed unbelievable Qt dragons to create something they could be proud of and now they would like to tell you all about it. This was an engineering adventure not for the faint of heart.

Building social apps

Building mobile apps is cool, but building socially engaging mobile apps is cooler! In this talk, Alex Kinsella from Research In Motion will give us insight into how to we can build socially engaged mobile application. What does it mean for an app to have social support? Why it is important? Alex will also share some success stories.

At Kik there are few things that we value more than good developers and that’s why we are trying to bring Silicon Valley culture to KW. For those seeking to build cool things that people actually use, in an environment that values you for the passion and skills you bring - look no further. If you already have your heart set on another adventure, then you should take a look at the Kik API that may expose your mobile app to more than 6 million of Kik users.
