ONE MORE DAY TO SIGN UP!  We are excited at the response we have had to this registration, we are almost booked up but there are a few last minute spaces left.  If you know someone who might be interested, it's not too late.

We will continue to take advance registrations at this website until 1pm on Tuesday 11th October.

IF YOU REGISTER, please return to this page and select which four classes you wish to attend.  Then send your selection -- just the four alphabetical letters, no need to type out the class name -- to cmcc.michelle@btinternet.com.   If you send it by 4pm we can honour your selections.   Some classes will run twice, to give you a chance to attend as many as possible.  

If you do not hear back from us to verify your selection, DON'T WORRY.  We will be out all day on the 11th and won't have much computer time but we will check in, later in the day.  It is possible you may need to select your classes at the registration desk.   In that event, just show up and we will try to accomodate your choices.

The Falkirk Invasive Species Forum (FISF) has been set up to help progress action to control invasive non-native species across the Falkirk Council area.  Its members include interested community groups, landowners, businesses, environmental agencies, statutory bodies and Falkirk Council.   Communities Along the Carron Association is working to regenerate the River Carron, including the Japanese Knotweed problem along its banks.  These two groups have come together to sponsor FISF’s first FREE public education event to be held from 9.45am to 4.30pm at the Grangemouth Town Hall on Wednesday 12th October, entitled “Aliens Among Us! Invasive Species Awareness Training Day”.   This event is being funded by Falkirk Environment Trust and Falkirk Council Development Services. 

What’s It About?  Free teaching seminars to educate those who deal with or may encounter invasive non-native species in the course of their work or daily activities in the Falkirk area, with a particular focus on the invasive species Japanese Knotweed.   Who Can Attend?  Professionals & volunteers from the construction industry, utilities, land management, community groups, university and agricultural college students, employees and managers from Falkirk Council services and the like.  Basically anyone interested in learning more about invasives in our area.  ALL ARE WELCOME!   

What Topics Will We Cover?  Japanese Knotweed, Himalayan Balsam, Giant Hogweed and other local INVASIVE SPECIES – identification, issues, treatment and the latest legislation on invasive species.  What is your responsibility as a land owner, contractor, etc?  Come Find Out!  What Does the Day Include?  Several classroom presentations, information stalls, refreshments, a free buffet lunch and great opportunities to network.   Representatives from the industry will give presentations on case studies, experts from the private and gov't sectors will give classes on everything from species identification to treatment to "the law".

FREE EVENT!  ALL WELCOME!  FISF and CATCA are not for profit groups who are providing a public service by hosting this event with help from our funders.  We just want to get the word out and give everyone a great opportunity to share knowledge on these issues!

The Falkirk Council Chief Executive opens the day at 10.30. You will be able to browse/network the stalls before 10.30, during lunch (12.30-1.45) and at the end of the day (3.30-4.30).

A “Practical Considerations when Controlling Alien Invasive Species”
Audrey Morrison, Clackmannanshire & Stirling Environment Trust
Synopsis - A co-ordinated and strategic plan is essential when attempting to control or eradicate alien invasive species. This talk will provide an overview of the main considerations.

B “Herbicide Applications and SEPA”
Andy Hemingway, Scottish Environment Protection Agency
Synopsis - How to notify SEPA before using herbicides in or near water.

C “The South Esk – A Landscape-wide Approach to Invasive Weed Control”
Andrew Vaughan, UPM Tilhill
Synopsis – Using a case study example, guidance and lessons learnt will be offered based on a long term project controlling Japanese Knotweed, Giant Hogweed and Himalayan balsam on the South Esk, Angus.

D “Landfill Community Funding and Invasive Species – Planning your Project to Access LCF Funding”
Art Berg, Falkirk Environment Trust
Synopsis – This workshop hopes to move community applicants towards understanding what’s involved in developing an LCF project that controls or eradicates invasives.

E “Know Your Aliens! A Beginner’s Guide”
Anna Perks, Falkirk Council Biodiversity Officer
Synopsis - A beginner’s guide to alien identification, alien behaviour and how to combat alien invasions! Identification, where/why they are a problem and what you can/should do about them. Workshop, Q&A

F “Japanese Knotweed – The Myth Entangled”
Maxime Jay, Musketeers Group Ltd (Glasgow)
Synopsis - The presentation will provide information for the identification of Japanese Knotweed on site; the current legislation; the Land Remediation Relief; the myths of Japanese Knotweed and the pitfalls in the Knotweed industry; Provide a logical thought process to tackle the invasive weeds; consider the current SEPA/EA guidelines and highlight innovative and cost-effective techniques developed by Musketeers Group Ltd.
