Where are women in the Free Software Movement?
Women’s participation to Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) projects is a hot topic in the 21st century. Common statistics are discouraging, whereby women represent 1.5% of developers in the field. However, other sources show that women, especially activists, are interested in learning, using and promoting FOSS in their communities.
This talk will aim to introduce into the software freedom philosophy, by stressing on the gender gap and the principles of functioning of the FOSS community that tend to isolate rather than include more female members.
While addressing broader issues related to women in the IT field, the presentation will focus on some FOSS-specific particularities and problems related to the visibility and recognition of different types of contributions in a strictly code-centered world.
