#nerdlearn is back to celebrate the summer!

Summer is in full swing. If you're like us at The Working Group, you're anxiously awaiting an opportunity to drink a cold beer, chat with some fellow TO developers, and #nerdlearn from some experts. Ah, the perfect nerdy summer evening.

Ask a developer about scaling an app, and they'll say "Worry about it when the time comes, that's a good problem to have". Ask a developer in the middle of a burning fire caused by a scaling issue, and they look like this:

rage-face

On June 6th at 6:00pm, we'll be talking about "Scaling Your App For The Future" with three awesome developers from the Toronto community. They've all had ample experience scaling apps, and they all have horror stories and battle scars to prove it. Come on out to hear how they addressed their issues, when the right time to focus on scaling is, and how to handle the aftermath with your clients and users.

We have panelists from FreshBooks, 500px, PostageApp, and Nulogy involved.

Jason is the team lead for the infrastructure team at FreshBooks, the leaders in on-line invoicing. FreshBooks was founded to solve one person's problem, and now millions of people send and receive their invoices, track time, log expenses, and run their small businesses. More people sign up every day, so FreshBooks has encountered and slain a few scalability beasts in the past. Jason has spent his life writing code for all types of platforms, and has been on the Internet since before there was a web. These days he leads the team responsible for FreshBooks internal and back-end systems - you know, the ones that do the hard work ;) @jdiller

Oleg is the co-founder and CEO of 500px, a social photo platform with the focus on the best photography in the world. He started coding at the age of 9, and hasn't been able to let go of the keyboard since. 500px brings together his passions for technology, photography, travel, and culture. Oleg has grown the company from a few thousand users in 2009 to what it is today (orders of magnitude more!), so you can bet he had to tackle some scaling issues along the way. @oleggutsol

In 2009, Scott co-founded PostageApp, a SaaS-based email delivery service for web apps. He's currently Chief Architect at TWG, and spends most of his time building PostageApp. When you're sending an email, you generally want it delivered the second you click 'send'. When your app is sending an email, you expect the same timeliness. Because of this, Scott has spent a lot of time scaling PostageApp to satisfy those needs, and has lots of interesting stories peppered with the words 'priority queueing', 'engine', 'database', and 'throughput'. Scott is a 4-time Science Fair Winner when he was a kid, and the #5 Answerer on Stack Overflow for ruby-on-rails - http://stackoverflow.com/tags/ruby-on-rails/topusers @tadmanter

Sean is a Co-Founder and Chief Architect at Nulogy, an enterprise Rails company that builds contract packaging software. Building an enterprise SaaS app is very different from your average direct-to-consumer web app. You don't have to worry about millions of users, but you do have to worry about running someone else's business and the fact that they are losing money when your system is down or slow. Sean spends a lot of his time obsessing about how to grow dependable, highly-integrated software and has had the opportunity to build several successful enterprise web systems. All of which have had their growing pains.

Panel Details

Our #nerdlearn panels are always very casual. We'll start the night off with pizza, beer, and mingling. The panel will begin at 6:30pm, and will run for about an hour. Although we do have a general plan for the discussion, we encourage you to get involved throughout the hour, ask our panelists tough questions, and shout out your opinions. The more you #nerdlearn, the happier our panelists are! If you want to bring along some developer friends, feel free to send along this invite!

A huge thank you to our friends at TorontoStandard.com for sponsoring #nerdlearn. Check them out at @TorontoStandard and on Facebook.
